Harp (chang)

The harp can boast of a particularly long and ancient pedigree and it was a vital part of music-making for millennia in Persia, where it was called the 'chang'. The particular instrument used in this concert is of a medieval European design, but it bears a striking resemblance to the many representations of the chang in Persian art. The chang became obsolete at some point in the early seventeenth century CE and is not used in modern Iranian classical music, nor have any examples of this fragile instrument survived. However, it is enjoying something of a revival in the twenty-first century, when its contribution to Persian culture and its importance for the performance of the historical repertory are becoming increasingly appreciated.
